Lake Manyara

Godwit Safaris / Destinations / Lake Manyara

The Lake Manyara National Park, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania, is a compact yet diverse safari destination. Covering about 330 square kilometers, the park is famous for its lush groundwater forests, soda lake, and striking scenery that contrasts sharply with the open savannahs of nearby Serengeti and Tarangire.

The park’s centerpiece, Lake Manyara, attracts thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Wildlife is abundant, with elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo roaming freely. Manyara is also renowned for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior that adds to its allure.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, canoeing (seasonally), and cultural experiences with nearby Maasai communities. The park’s varied habitats — from dense forests and acacia woodlands to open plains and hot springs — make it one of Tanzania’s most ecologically rich destinations despite its smaller size.

Lake Manyara is ideal for travelers seeking a short yet rewarding safari, especially as part of the northern Tanzania circuit alongside Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire.
