Volcanoes

Volcanoes National Park, located in northern Rwanda, is one of Africa’s most celebrated conservation areas and the world’s premier destination for mountain gorilla trekking. Covering about 160 square kilometers, the park forms part of the Virunga Mountains ecosystem, a chain of dramatic volcanic peaks including Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.

The park protects roughly one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, with over 600 individuals living across the Virunga range. Treks are carefully managed — only eight visitors per gorilla family per day — ensuring intimate, low-impact encounters. Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo, and a rich variety of birdlife.

Adventure opportunities extend beyond gorilla trekking. Visitors can hike volcanoes, explore caves, or visit the Dian Fossey Research Center, honoring the legendary primatologist who dedicated her life to gorilla conservation. Cultural experiences with local communities, including traditional dance and village visits, add depth to the journey.

Volcanoes National Park is ideal for travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter combined with breathtaking scenery and cultural immersion.
